ABOUT THE ROLE

We at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) are looking for an experienced Civil Engineering Technician to lead the development and delivery of the Civil Construction Design course. This position is for a passionate Civil Engineering Professional who is enthusiastic and motivated to help others enter the field of Civil Engineering. We are looking for someone who has demonstrated knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Structural (steel, concrete and timber) engineering analysis and design to Australian Standards
  • Preparing structural and geotechnical documentation, drawings, and reports
  • Urban road design to Australian Standards
  • Building relationships and networks with civil engineering companies, equipment and technology vendors
  • Construction site practices, including WHS requirements and practices.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Minimum three years of experience with Civil design and documentation
  • Diploma or higher level qualification in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • Proficiency with CAD software, including AutoCAD, REVIT and Civil 3D
  • A willingness to learn, acquire new skills and continuously improve in the role;
  • A hands-on attitude to delivering the best solutions for training;
  • Strong attention to detail and passion for safety, environment and quality of work;

Reporting to the Director, your duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Analyse survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographical or geologic data to inform the direction of projects as well as the overall budget constraints.
  • Compute load and grade requirements, and material stress factors to determine design specifications.
  • Forecast design and construction time frames.
  • Conduct feasibility assessments and site inspections to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications, projects meet relevant codes and are progressing properly.
  • Direct or participate in surveying to lay out installations and establish reference points, grades, and elevations to guide construction.

As work is increasing, we have now a vacant position for a Site Engineer - Structures to join the Structures team. 

Responsibilities:

  • Minimise construction risks by identifying control requirements and apply to scope of works.
  • Assist with the procurement of project materials and letting of subcontracts. 
  • Oversee site construction works ensuring quality progress on a daily basis, including but not limited to foundations, FRP works, girders installation and finishings.
  • Liaise with site supervisors, subcontractors and suppliers to guarantee compliance with the program.
  • Coordinate any interface works with other teams - e.g. Traffic, Pavements and Civil works to ensure smooth interfaces.
  • Plan and coordinate installation works of a steel pedestrian footbridge of a span of 60m over the Pacific Highway.
  • Manage costs associated with scope of work, including tracking costs accurately and maintaining cost forecast.
  • Assist in the preparation of Work Procedures, Inspection & Test Plans, Safe Work Method Statements, Construction Procedures and Site Access Plans.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Engineering, major in Civil and / or Structural.
  • Previous structural experience working with Prestressed Super T Girder Bridges / Steel Truss Bridge and/or Retaining Walls will be beneficial.
  • Ability to interpret designs for construction implementation. 
  • Experience with cost tracking and providing input into work programs and performance of teams and subcontractors.
  • Proven verbal, written, interpersonal communication skills and ability to develop and maintain diverse stakeholder relationships.
