THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for a full-time, experienced Grade 1 Multidisciplinary Scientist for the performance of duties within the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory and Specimen Triage at VCS Pathology. Responsibilities will include but not limited to:

• Perform the daily operations of all areas of the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory and Specimen Triage.

• Assist in the supervision of new staff and professional placement students working within the areas of the laboratory and Specimen Triage.

• Perform Cytopreparation and Histology techniques.

• Receive, identify and triage all specimens delivered to VCS Pathology by mail or courier.

• Prepare samples including ThinPrep, Histology, swabs and conventional slides for laboratory processing.

• Resolve specimen queries in consultation with the Senior Scientists Team

• Identify and triage complex specimens in consultation with the Senior Scientists Team (i.e., Compass follow up, diagnostic versus routine screening, previous gynaecological cancer etc.)

• Develop, document and review of procedures for Cytopreparation and Histology Techniques.

• Develop, document and review of procedures for Specimen Triage area.

• Coordination of storage in compliance with NPAAC requirements.

• Observing safe work practices

• Monitoring of stock levels

• Operation and maintenance of equipment and completion of equipment logs

• Participation in special projects

• Participation in internal and external Quality Assurance activities.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced Multidisciplinary Scientist looking to build their career within a purpose-driven organisation. We are seeking a motivated and committed individual with the following qualifications and experience:

• Tertiary qualification in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.

• Knowledge of OH&S requirements for medical laboratories.

• Knowledge of safe handling and storage techniques for Biohazardous materials.

• Strong record keeping and computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Familiarity with laboratory regulatory provisions and NATA.

• Experience in laboratory procedures and techniques for the handling tissues, specimens for histology, including gross examination, embedding, sectioning, H/E staining and special staining including immunohistochemistry is desirable.

• Experience in Specimen Reception is desirable.
